American Dish: Fried Honey Bananas, Jamaican Twist: Fried Plantains

Feeds: 6

What you will need:

1 RIPE Yellow Plantain (plantain should be yellow in color with mostly brown areas…see picture below for a perfect example)

1 Large Frying Pan

2 Tablespoons of Canola Oil

1 Teaspoon of Salt

1 Large Plate

PLAIN Paper Towels

1 Sharp Knife

Now Let’s Make It!

Use your sharp knife to cut off both ends of the plantain until only the base of the plantain is left.

Next, cut a line from the top to the bottom of the base. Peel the skin off of the plantain to reveal the plantain only. Discard the skin

Cut the plantain into 3 individual pieces horizontally

Cut each piece vertically into medium slices. Each individual piece should make at least 4 vertical pieces

Next, take your plate and coat with PLAIN paper towels. Set plate to the side

Add the oil to your frying pan and put on high heat for 4 minutes (make sure oil is hot before moving to next step)

Lower heat to medium high for 15 seconds

Add your 1st batch of plantains to your frying pan. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan

Only fry on each side for 1 ½ minutes each

Once completed, use a fork to transfer each plantain from your frying pan to your paper towel coated plate you set up previously

If necessary, add your 2nd batch of plantains for 1 ½ minutes on each side as well

Now you have the perfect Jamaican side dish

Enjoy!
